4. Meeting The Mentor
At this crucial turning point where the Hero desperately needs guidance he meets a mentor figure who gives him something he needs. He could be given an object of great importance, insight into the dilemma he faces, wise advice, practical training or even self-confidence. Whatever the mentor provides the Hero with it serves to dispel his doubts and fears and give him the strength and courage to begin his quest.
Cuz turns to the kids for their perception of his dilemma with his girlfriend and his attitude. They present two different sides. The Upper Nature kids are positive with their widgets of perception, emotions, thinking, and acting. The Lower Nature kids present the negative side of lies, selfishness, blaming, and aggression.
Without love guiding Cuz’s conscious choice, he made the wrong choice and put fighting in the gangs ahead of her. His Upper Nature wants to help him in the relationship but his Lower Nature sees a chance to lead him astray.
A flower is as delicate as love, it needs to be nurtured. In any relationship we must nurture our partner like a mother to her infant, serving this baby’s needs so it can live and be happy.
His conscience, like a captain of a small vessel in the storms of temptation and turmoil tell him not to give-up. But the high waves of a storm creates a void that overwhelms him at this point so he decides to turn to his addiction of fighting to feel better. The kids follow him.
Cuz’s conscience recognizes his struggle between is Upper Nature and his Lower Nature and then see’s how BJ was braver then he was to have came and rescued him by making him rescue her. This disturbed him and so he decided to go talk to Grandma again.
Parties and addictive pleasure are short lived. They do not sustain the spirit for long.
He wants to date and remembers his girlfriend refused until he changed his attitude. With Grand Ma as a mentor to talk to on empathy he begins to see hope of how it could work.
Cuz see’s the convict between the pain of his void and the fear of Larry’s Dad. These are hard lessons for Cuz to put together and know what to do. He will continue to figure them out as he goes.
